Tax & Filing 2026

“Over One Million Yen Gets Reported” Is Half True. Reporting and Filing Are Two Different Rules.

Separating the two thresholds, from the statute, the cabinet order and the National Tax Agency.

Where the rumour comes from

2 / 9
“Receive more than a million yen from abroad and the tax office finds out” — half true.
The figure is real and has a statutory basis. But it is not a threshold for anything you submit, and it is not what decides whether you owe a tax return.
💡 Whether something gets reported and whether you must file are decided by different laws, on different measures
3

The figure belongs to a record the bank files

3 / 9
Who: “a financial institution … must submit” (Act Art. 4(1)). Not the customer
By when: the last day of the month following the month of the exchange transaction
To whom: the competent District Director of the Tax Office for the bank office's location
From how much: “excluding those not more than the amount specified by cabinet order” = ¥1,000,000 (Order Art. 8(1))
💡 The NTA's own procedural page carries no figure at all. The number lives in Article 8(1) of the enforcement order
4

It is not only about money leaving Japan

4 / 9
“Overseas remittance, etc.” = remittance abroad + receipt of a remittance from abroad
Article 2(v) defines the second limb as receiving, through a bank's exchange transaction, a payment directed from outside Japan into Japan. Taking an affiliate payout from an overseas operator can fall squarely within it.
✅ Article 4(1)(ii) lists, for receipts, the customer's name, address and the amount received among the required contents

What you hand over is a different document

⚠️ The notification is excused not by amount but by being a “specified remittance / specified receipt” (Art. 3(2)) — e.g. receipt into your own verified account

Account information sits under CRS

6 / 9
NTA CRS page: “the tax authority of each country receives reports of financial account information held by non-residents from financial institutions located in its own country, and provides that information to the tax authority of the non-resident's country of residence.”
📄
That general framework is what is published. An account held abroad by a Japan resident is, from that country's side, a non-resident account
⚠️ We did not find a statement permitting the flat claim that your overseas account information will certainly reach the Japanese authority. Scope, participation and timing vary with the facts

The point: ¥1m is not the filing threshold

⚠️ “Under a million, so I don't need to file” does not follow. You can go a year without a single million-yen transfer and still be in filing territory

Recording a payout in foreign currency

8 / 9
Default: the TTM (mid-rate) on the transaction date, between customer TTS and TTB (Ruling 57-3-2)
Proviso: for a business giving rise to real estate, business, timber or miscellaneous income, revenue may use TTB and expenses TTS
The condition: continuous application. Not a switch you flip each year to whichever is favourable
⚠️ The ruling has been through a 2025 (Reiwa 7) amendment, and rate sourcing involves practical judgement — take it to your tax office or a licensed tax accountant

Today, go only as far as the record

1
List this year's payouts: date received, foreign-currency amount, receiving account
2
Convert to yen and see whether the figure after expenses is likely to pass ¥200,000
3
Save the underlying evidence somewhere you can retrieve later
4
Write down what you are unsure about and take it to your tax office or a licensed tax accountant
These slides are a general explanation of the mechanism, not tax advice. Filing obligations, income categories and conversion methods are individual determinations for your competent tax office or a licensed tax accountant. Trading carries the risk of losing your principal
