Tools & Operations 2026

It usually isn't the document that failed. It's the address you typed.

Where crypto account opening in Japan stalls, and how to count backwards from your send date.

Three days later, and it wasn't an approval

2 / 9
Subject line: we could not verify your details. No reason given.
The document was in date and the photos were sharp. The mismatch was in the address field: the document printed the block and lot in full, I typed the compact hyphenated version and left the building name out.
💡 An address that gets post delivered is not automatically an address that passes a match
3

Only three things are checked

3 / 9
🪪
Name
🏠
Residence
🎂
Date of birth
💡 Date of birth rarely drifts. The address is the field with the widest scope for free text (source: NPA outline of the Act, as of 7 Aug 2026)
4

Four places where addresses drift

4 / 9
What the document printsWhat people type
Block and lot written out in fullThe compact hyphenated form
Building name plus flat numberFlat number only, building dropped
Older elements such as ōaza and azaCity and place name only
Nothing beyond the lot numberThe flat number added
💡 The last row drifts the other way. The post office would agree with you; the match does not
5

An out-of-date address adds a second piece of paper

5 / 9
Not your current address means confirming it with a supplementary document.
Examples given: a tax certificate, a social insurance premium receipt, a utility receipt, a document issued by a public agency. If it has a validity period it must be valid on the day; otherwise its receipt stamp or issue date must fall within the previous six months.
⚠️ The My Number notification card is not accepted as a supplementary document (source: NPA outline of the Act)
6

Three ways names drift

6 / 9
👤
A former surname printed alongside the current one: which one goes in the field
🌏
A middle name: nowhere to sit in a form with two fields
✍️
Characters you cannot type: kanji variants a plain web form rejects
✅ Handled differently by different operators. Send support one line before you submit, not after
7

eKYC and post make you wait for different things

7 / 9
📱
A: sending your face plus a photo-bearing document as image data, or your face plus the document's IC chip data — finished on transmission
📮
B: the operator takes the document or a copy, then posts transaction papers by registered mail to the recorded residence, not to be forwarded
⚠️ Not to be forwarded means exactly that. Day counts differ by operator, so none are quoted here
8

Lay the dates out from the back

8 / 9
Until verification clears, there is nothing to do.
1. The date you want to send. 2. When the deposit must be credited. 3. When the account must be usable. 4. When to apply. Getting documents in order sits between 3 and 4 — and an out-of-date address pushes the application date earlier still.
💡 You cannot set the review time. The application date is the one you control

Four checks before you submit

1
Put the document in front of you and read the address line by line
2
Copy that wording into the form exactly as printed
3
If the address is out of date, update the document or get a supplementary one
4
Count backwards from your send date, then set the application date
