Social Media Strategy 2026

Not whether to label, but where it goes. Ad disclosure, surface by surface

Only the parts of Japan's guideline and Q&A that answer the placement question itself.

The link on a three-year-old post is still live

2 / 9
Quote it and it shows again today.
There was no "PR" on it at the time. A blog post can be quietly unpublished; a social post has no middle setting. It stays up or it comes down.
💡 A post is judged by how it looks now, not by the date you wrote it

The unit judged is one post, not the account

🌐
Websites: the guideline says a comparison affiliate site that is clear site-wide need not repeat it for every item listed
📱
Social: a single post arrives via recommendations or a quote. That reader never passed your profile
💡 The first screen a reader touches is the "surface". Change the surface, change the placement

X: keep it in the body, not the replies

4 / 9
A label in the thread risks going unnoticed.
Consumer Affairs Agency Q&A, Q14: where "advertisement" appears in a reply rather than the post body, ordinary consumers will typically be at risk of not noticing it, and in many cases it will not count as clear.
✅ Put the link in a reply if you like. Do not send the disclosure down with it

X's own policy raises a separate issue

5 / 9
🤝
Definition: posts earning commission via affiliate links fall inside what X calls a paid partnership
🚫
Prohibited industries include: financial products, services or opportunities (investment services, cryptocurrency and more)
⚠️ This is X's house rule, not law, and exceptions may be considered case by case. Read the current text yourself
6

Video: the opening alone is not enough

6 / 9
⚖️
Q&A Q15: viewers may join partway, so an opening-only label risks being missed. Keeping it on screen throughout is desirable
▶️
YouTube help: ticking "paid promotion" triggers an automatic disclosure for the first ten seconds
💡 Ticking the box and making it clear stay two separate jobs
7

note and bios: outside the wall, off the path

7 / 9
🔒
Paid note articles: non-purchasers see only the free portion, so the disclosure belongs outside the wall (author's reading)
👤
Profile fields: they only work on people who open them. Q12: stating an affiliation alone is not necessarily clear
⚠️ The guideline's carve-out for "a business's own social account" is about the advertiser's official account
8

Every time? Some cases are explicitly exempt

8 / 9
The post isHow the Q&A reads it
An individual paid requestLikely a business's representation (Q19)
Written on your own initiativeNot a business's representation — no label (Q21)
You did paid work for them beforeIf this one is your own, no label (Q18)
💡 Judged per post, not per account: is consideration or a request attached to this one?

Four things before you post

1
Check a stranger could tell from this one post alone
2
On X, keep the disclosure in the body even when the link sits in a reply
3
For video, decide the on-screen run separately from the platform declaration
4
Work old posts in order of what still circulates, and take uneditable surfaces to the advertiser
